What Happens in Detox

Generally, there are three stages of detox.

Your experience of withdrawal depends on how much you have been depending on drugs or alcohol and how long you have been using the substances.

Usually, people go through three stages of detox.

During the first stage (within 8 hours), expect to have difficulty sleeping, headaches that can turn into migraines, and stomach upsets, nausea, migraines, depending on the substance you are withdrawing from, frequency, and recency of usage.

During the second stage (three days to a week after you stop using), your blood pressure may be affected; you can also develop a fever.

If you are a heavy alcohol user, there is a chance of getting Delirium Tremens (DT). This is a serious condition marked by the presence of tremors and loss of consciousness.

During stage three, occurring a week after withdrawal, some people can experience Post-Acute Withdrawal Syndrome (PAWS). Some people feel depressed, anxious and problems sleeping may persist.

The physical hardships that happen during detox are very much associated with not following through on the detox process.

Because addiction to a substance makes you feel normal when you are using the substance, people in withdrawal quit detox so they can get rid of the awful physical symptoms.

This is why we advice coming to our rehab centre near Weston for the duration of the detox process.

In Abbeycare we will make sure you are supervised and guided in one of the hardest stages of recovery.

Rehab Treatment Flow

After you settle in your room, we will conduct a short assessment before we commence detox. You will be asked to do some medical checks.

We begin detox as soon as possible.

We want to make sure that you have the right medication to make withdrawal less of a pain. It is very important that we get the dosage and medication right, as we don’t want you to feel worse than you are already feeling.

After about a week, you should be ready to handle most of the activities in the centre.

A typical day would consist of two to three sessions. This can be group sessions or one-on-one sessions.

During the last week in rehab, we will devise a rehab aftercare plan.

As we want you to continue with the recovery process after rehab, we will do our best to prepare you for the big and small changes that will take place in your life.

What Happens After Rehab?

During rehab aftercare planning, we will give you support numbers to call and support people to contact, so you don’t feel alone when you are at your most vulnerable. In addition, we’ll coach you so you can:

  • Deal with drug and/or alcohol cravings
  • Deal with stressors and triggers
  • Deal with minor slips

Together, we will come up with a follow-up plan and a schedule of consultations and meetings for recovery support groups.
