In This Guide

Do you or a loved one need addiction treatment for alcohol or drugs? It's easy to sign up too quickly for treatment, without a proper understanding what to look for.

We've compiled this need-to-know guide, including questions to ask each clinic *before* you pay - including a printable cheatsheet.

Step 1 - Needs .v. Wants

There are a wealth of treatment options available for those fresh to the journey of recovery. But, choosing the wrong provider early on, might mean drawing the wrong conclusions about recovery, and what's possible for your future.

Detox-Only, Versus Full Rehabilitation Programme

A normal stay for alcohol or drug treatment would include the three stages of detoxification, rehabilitation, and aftercare planning. But there's no point in spending more than you have to.

- Have you tried treatment previously, without success? Or even, tried going it alone without professional help? (Be truthful).

If you've completed previous treatment and have a good understanding of self already, the full programme may not be required. But if you don't have supports in place, the detox-only option may not be enough.

Finding Rehab Near Port Talbot

Understandably, when feeling low and needing detox, most will opt for a clinic close to where they live.

But the provider on your doorstep doesn't necessarily provide the best overall value, in the context of your entire recovery journey.

Clinics have to pass muster with regulators re the basics of detox and rehab, but how supportive is their team? What is the staff:client numbers ratio? What happens if you struggle in future? Researching the most appropriate option for you personally, can yield big long term results in your sobriety, later.

More Than One Previous Detox?

Like many things in life, the quality of your experience in a rehab clinic can come down to the breadth and depth of experience of the staff you're working with.

You'll want a clear idea here of what detox protocol you're getting, and what help is available during it.

Most clinics have standardised approaches for routine detoxes for alcohol etc, but anything more complex will need specialist input from suitably qualified professionals.

Getting reassurance that the provider is not only ready to detox you based on your needs, but has done so many times for others in the past, is important.

Recommended Questions To Ask:

KEY QUESTIONS

- Can you easily accommodate my detox needs?
- Is dealing with someone with my intake level and addiction history, a normal everyday client for your clinic?
- If I have questions about my specific detox needs, who would I speak to?

Step 2 - What Does A Stay In Rehab Actually Involve?

What is the typical admission process?

Rehabilitation clinics operate a residential service - you stay residentially, in the clinic, 24hrs a day, usually with your own room and personal space.

Expect to complete a pre-admissions screening process over the phone - this is quite normal.

Keeping Track Of Getting Better

If your clinic provides strong personal attention in the programme, they should help you map out what you want from treatment, exactly.

If staff do not offer to help draw up a personalised care plan of action for your clinic time, and longer recovery journey, you've chosen the wrong provider.

Be sure to take an active part in this, to avoid having standardised goals laid out, that don't match your preferences or personal situation. Make sure to take an active part in this stage.

KEY QUESTIONS

- What sort of care planning takes place when I enter the clinic?
- How do you help clients measure goals and progress?
- Is care planning done for me, or is it collaborative?
- How is care planning done?

A Day In The Life

What actually happens in a clinic, every day?

Asking some key questions before admitting to a clinic can help you get a sense for what life is like in treatment, before committing.

In treatment, you should receive some form of agenda for each day of the week. The agenda lets you know what's happening when, and what activities you should participate in.

Detox from alcohol or substance misuse in a clinic can last anywhere from a few days to several weeks, depending on multiple factors. Some will be ready to start therapeutic work after just a few days. Other times, it takes longer for the body to process the left-over substances. Clinic staff understand this.

Visiting the clinic before committing to treatment will also help you gauge just what the everyday is like, inside a centre, before committing financially.

Ask your provider:

KEY QUESTIONS

- Do you have a virtual online tour I can take?
- Can you send me an example of what the daily schedule is like, in the clinic?
- How do I arrange to see inside the clinic, before admitting?
- When would I be expected to move from detox into therapy in the clinic?

How Does Covid-19 Affect Rehab Centres?

Few people successfully make it into long term recovery without the help of the bigger group around them.

Only with the support of others on the journey, can we hope to make a full recovery.

Making long term recovery gains today, means being careful to check on some basics re covid-19 preparedness and preventative measures.

Make sure of the following:
  • Does the clinic have provisions in place relating to Covid-19 prevention and detection (for your safety).
  • What daily agenda items in the clinic mean group interaction, and are they adjusted appropriately to accommodate concerns re covid-19?

Step 3 - Planning The Financials Of Rehab

Naturally, funding private rehab treatment in Port Talbot is a concern for many.

There are few half way house providers that exist generally, between public providers, and private treatment, so get clear from the start on which you need.

  • Non-private help for addiction can be limited to local outpatient support with an assigned keyworker, and appropriate signposting to other specialists for help in other areas. For some, this can work well. Others need something more specialist. Often this approach is suited to those who already have other support channels in place or perhaps are suffering only a minor set back after a long history of sobriety.
  • Private rehab clinics - are often the catalyst at the start of the process of long term recovery. There is no substitute for the experience of staff in private treatment units. Let's be realistic - private help like this is not cheap. But there is no more specialist help available. Of course, private clinics have to recompense their specialist staff, and thus fees are attached. Expect to pay anywhere from £3,000 - £18,000+, for a private rehab stay, depending on duration and needs.
Public Or Private?
Public
  • Mostly Out-Patient
  • Possible onward referral
  • Low/No-cost
  • Residential treatment rare
  • High demand, long waiting lists
Private
  • Includes detox, rehab, therapy, aftercare
  • Full programme  in one location
  • Quick access to treatment
  • Funded by client

Like most things in life, it's tempting to go for simply the cheapest cost provider.

Working with minimalist care, in a clinic with spartan conditions is not conducive to personal breakthroughs. Instead, look for alternative providers with smaller programmes, headcount, and overheads, to strike the right balance.

Without committing yet, get in touch with at least 3 potential treatment centres and ask about costs and your needs. You'll also get some insight here as to how much attention each provider pays and their levels of care.

Looking Beyond Clinic Treatment

Community-Led Support Channels

Big Book, or 12 step meetings, are available via groups such as AA and NA, across most towns and cities.

Whilst mutual aid plays a big part for many, later in their recovery journey, those at the start will need professional help to detox safely.

Mutual aid meetings have earned their place in everyone's recovery. But starting out - you'll need more specialist help for detox.

NHS Assistance

In the first instance, it's possible to present to your GP and discuss the possibility of referral to your local addictions team, in the NHS. They will usually help you monitor the effects of addiction in your life, but are unable to refer or provide funding for immediate detox, in most cases.

Eligibility for short term detox is slim, and is usually restricted to only a handful of cases.

Families and friends often agree to jointly finance private treatment, in cases where no publicly funded options are available.

Step 4 - Read The Only Impartial Reports

Opinions on different clinics' standards of care are ten a penny on the internet, but how do you know who to trust?

In these situations we need an independent and impartial regulator's opinion - in this case, The Care Quality Commission (CQC) for England and Wales, and The Care Inspectorate, for Scotland.

These regulatory bodies complete inspections to ensure a minimum level of service is met.

Clinics are reviewed on quality and expertise of their service, staff, and care levels provided.

How Clinic Inspections Work

When looking for CQC or Care Inspectorate reports, always look for those stating the visit was "Unannounced" instead of "Announced" - this means the provider was not aware the inspection was occurring, and hence is most likely to provide most insight into genuine standards of care.

Step 5 - Choose A Clinic

Now is the time to come to a decision about where you're completing treatment.

Normally, the provider will take you through a few initial questions, when you call, to make sure you're a good fit, and will work well together.

When the assessment is complete, you'll likely be asked to pay a deposit, to book a place in the clinic, and allow the provider to start preparing for your arrival.

Now is also the time to finalise any other arrangements re payment, like paying via insurance policy.

Step 6 - Paying For Rehab

As mentioned, an initial deposit payment is usually expected.

Expect to pay anywhere from £1,800 to £4,000 to book a place in a treatment provider's clinic.

It's less common nowadays to see treatment clinics themselves offering payment plan options.

Be sure to get a written confirmation of receipt for your deposit, and confirm with the provider any admin fees due, in the event of admission delays, or even cancellation, due to unforeseen circumstances.

Balance To Pay

The balance to pay for treatment, if not paying via insurance or a third party, is usually due when you arrive to admit to the clinic.

Interest on late payment for a significant sum like this can be significant, so it's worth getting this done on time.

Step 7 - Admission

Make note of the day and time you're due to admit to treatment.

Pack enough essentials for your treatment duration, like:

  • Informal clothing for routine clinic activities
  • Essential toiletries (*excluding products containing alcohol)
  • Appropriate accessories and wear for any leisure facilities available
  • A supply of any regular prescribed medication, to last the length of your stay

Make sure to check paperwork for any restrictions on device usage (not all clinics allow this), internet access, and visits from family.

Make sure to finalise transport arrangements a few days in advance, to ensure you attend the clinic on time, and avoid any surcharges on delays on treatment.

And of course, enjoy your recovery!
