Addiction Problem in Inverclyde

Whereas Scotland has the worst drug problem in Europe, Inverclyde is dubbed as the drug capital of Scotland.

Sadly, this district, which is comprised mainly of the historic Renfrewshire areas, has the worst record, statistically, for drug abuse.

Inverclyde has the highest prevalence rate of a drug problem at 2.9 percent, which is twice as high as the rest of Scotland.

Because of this, more people in Inverclyde die young due to drug or alcohol issues.

More children are orphaned, more families are broken, and more lives are wasted. We understand that addiction is really an uphill battle for its victims and their families.

However, we want to let you know that we are here – ready to help.

If you are here reading this message, you have already made a big step to seek for help and recovery.

You can call us on 01603 513 091  and our addiction specialist will be more than glad to talk to you.

Addictions for Which to Seek Treatment

Usually, those in active addiction are in denial.

They fail to see their addiction.

They often convince themselves that they are fine.

Neither you nor us, can force an individual to admit to addiction treatment.

However, you can communicate your concern and help them acknowledge or realise their addiction, and it’s effects in their life, and yours.

Abbeycare residential programmes can assist in the first line treatment of:

  • Alcoholism – This is the most common form of addiction because alcohol is a legal drug that is easily available anywhere. Society is also more tolerant of excessive and uncontrollable consumption of alcohol.
  • Drug addiction. Substance misuse disorder can refer to addiction to illicit drugs or prescription drugs.

Examples of illicit drugs include cocaine/crack, cannabis/ marijuana, psychoactive or legal highs (Spice), amphetamine (crystal meth), heroin, or stimulant drugs (Ecstasy)

Examples of prescription drugs include opiates/opioids ( tramadol and fentanyl), benzodiazepines (Xanax and valium) and barbiturates/ depressants (e.g. Amytal, Nembutal, and Phenobarbital)

Detoxification At Abbeycare

Detox is the first phase in substance abuse recovery, prior to engaging in ongoing abstinence.

A person undergoing detox will experience withdrawal symptoms as the body reacts to the absence of drugs and normalises again.

Detox in Abbeycare is professionally-assisted. Residents undergoing detox are closely monitored.

Withdrawal symptoms that are experienced by recovering people can be distressing and dangerous.

Depending on the severity, medication may be given to ease the effects of withdrawal symptoms and help reduce cravings.

12-Step Approach

The 12-Step approach is a set of guidelines or steps that people in rehab follow towards recovery.

The steps comprise of admitting powerlessness, believing and submitting oneself to a higher power, admission of mistakes and asking forgiveness, making amends, seeking intervention through prayer and medication and attaining spiritual awakening, among others.

The model is progressively revised and customised for individual care planning.

The 12 step program is designed for long-term recovery. You will begin this process, in Abbeycare.

It is an enduring program for all people who have undergone rehab.

To live a life of recovery, entails that you help others suffering from addiction also.

Abbeycare Therapeutic Community

The Abbeycare community is a therapeutic community.

All staff and residents  become part of the social and learning community that will provide support for the recovery journey of all involved.

It emphasises the active participation by all community members of the program, for the overall objective of conquering addiction and preventing recidivism.

In the community, your time will be primarily spent in therapeutic group sessions and one-to-one dialogues with an individually-assigned key worker.

You will also focus on the development of coping skills and healthy behaviours, and making these into a habitual routine in your life.

The community follows a structure in which members work through stages with corresponding freedom and responsibilities.

All community members follow community guidelines and norms to facilitate self-control and responsibility.
