In This Guide

Do you or a loved one need addiction treatment for alcohol or drugs? Many simply don't know how to compare treatment providers and end up settling for less.

Before taking the plunge, here's everything you need to know when shopping around for addiction help in Ebbw Vale.

Step 1 - Understand What You Need

At the bottom of another binge it can feel all too easy to quickly commit to the nearest clinic offering a fast detox. But considering first, what your treatment needs truly are, can help you pay for rehab just once, and not twice.

Detox, Rehab, Or Both?

Some providers can try to sell Rehab, and even Aftercare, upfront, before you've even started treatment, but do you really need all these?

- Do you need all three stages of treatment, detox > rehab > aftercare? Think about this carefully.

Be honest with yourself here, as going the detox-only route initially, when underlying work is truly needed, often ends in paying for treatment twice, not once.

Treatment Near Ebbw Vale

Thinking of treatment nearby? It's a natural response when feeling low.

Make comparisons instead, against level of care, support, and independent reviews from The Care Quality Commission (England & Wales) or The Care Inspectorate (Scotland).

Therapy levels vary wildly from clinic to clinic, and therapist to therapist. What feedback do you have on the clinic you plan to attend? We're getting to the real questions here about standard of care delivered, instead of just the bare minimum.

Detox Requirements

Making sure you're getting the right support, can have a serious impact on long term results.

This can be especially important where you have complex drug or alcohol detox needs.

Most clinics have standardised approaches for routine detoxes for alcohol etc, but anything more complex will need specialist input from suitably qualified professionals.

Getting reassurance that the provider is not only ready to detox you based on your needs, but has done so many times for others in the past, is important.

The Right Questions To Ask -

KEY QUESTIONS

- In your experience, would someone with my detox needs be better suited for hospital detox?
- What experience do you have in administering detox for individuals with my specific intake and frequency?
- Will I be able to speak with someone who decides about my detox regimen, once admitted to the clinic?

Step 2 - What Does A Stay In Rehab Actually Involve?

What is day to day addiction treatment inside the clinic actually like?

You'll stay full time in a clinic, normally with a dedicated room and your own space, complete detox, and attend therapeutic sessions several times a week. Towards the end of your stay, the clinic should set up supports for the future. More about that later.

Before admission, you should expect to complete an initial assessment over the phone with admissions staff, whose job it is to co-ordinate the information you provide with specialists inside the clinic, and ensure their facility can meet your needs.

What Is A Care Plan?

If your clinic provides strong personal attention in the programme, they should help you map out what you want from treatment, exactly.

If staff do not offer to help draw up a personalised care plan of action for your clinic time, and longer recovery journey, you've chosen the wrong provider.

Whilst not the most exciting part of the journey, this is a necessary means to help you monitor progress toward your long term vision. Don't miss this bit out.

Suggested Questions:

KEY QUESTIONS

- Do you provide a written plan for me to follow, during treatment?
- Do you have a one size fits all approach to treatment, or do you work with each individual's needs?
- What will my care plan include?
- Am I passed from one staff member to another, as shifts change?

What's Rehab Treatment Like, Day To Day?

Tell me about the daily routine in treatment?

The structure of each day will vary of course, from one provider to the next.

Since residential rehab is a group environment, most clinics provide each client with a daily agenda, every night for the following day. The agenda lets you know what's happening when, and what activities you should participate in.

The duration of detox each individual needs, will vary, based on multiple factors, including frequency and recency of usage, history of addiction, previous detoxes, etc. The pace of your treatment can vary. For example, for those with lighter intake levels, progression beyond the detox phase of clinic work can happen in just a few days. Others may take much longer than this to progress. Clinic staff understand this.

Also, make sure to ask to arrange a visit to look around the clinic, first.

KEY QUESTIONS

- Do you have a virtual online tour I can take?
- Do you have sample daily agendas for treatment I can look at?
- Can I arrange a visit to the clinic, to look around, without obligation, before committing?
- Based on my information, how quickly would you want me to start taking part in the therapy schedule, following detox?

Rehab & Covid-19

Recovering from addiction is a group-oriented exercise.

Those in long term recovery achieved it, only by accepting help from others, and helping them, in return.

Making long term recovery gains today, means being careful to check on some basics re covid-19 preparedness and preventative measures.

Make sure of the following:
  • How does covid-19 affect the rehab programme?
  • What daily agenda items in the clinic mean group interaction, and are they adjusted appropriately to accommodate concerns re covid-19?

Step 3 - Managing The Budget For Treatment

Whilst private clinics offer fast access to specialist help, financing the stay in treatment needs planning.

Public services are accountable to the tax payer, and seldom offer more specialist interventions.

  • Via a referral from your GP, a local community addiction keyworker can review your case, and arrange for outpatient appointments on a regular basis. This normally starts with educational material, and monitoring intake levels through self-management. Often this approach is suited to those who already have other support channels in place or perhaps are suffering only a minor set back after a long history of sobriety.
  • Private providers - the main advantage to private rehab clinics is fast and easy access to supervised detox, a custom treatment plan, and end-to-end joined up addiction care, all under one roof. Whilst they do come at a cost, private clinics have experience in providing specialist insight and intervention. This can have a significant impact on your longer term sobriety. Of course, private clinics have to recompense their specialist staff, and thus fees are attached. Expect to pay anywhere from £3,000 - £18,000+, for a private rehab stay, depending on duration and needs.
Public Or Private?
Public
  • Keywork visit focussed
  • Referral to other specialists if/as needed
  • Free or low cost service
  • No rehab/residential care (usually)
  • Long waiting lists
Private
  • Complete treatment: detox, therapeutic help, relapse prevention
  • All elements in a fully residential programme
  • Start treatment 24-48 hrs (usually)
  • Not publicly funded

Like most things in life, it's tempting to go for simply the cheapest cost provider.

Instead, to keep costs reasonable but standards high, consider providers further afield, or smaller clinics with a lower headcount and rural location.

Without committing yet, get in touch with at least 3 potential treatment centres and ask about costs and your needs. You'll also get some insight here as to how much attention each provider pays and their levels of care.

Other Avenues For Help

AA/NA/GA Meetings

Most locations hold local Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous meetings which can assist in the mutual aid and social elements of recovery.

For most at the start of the recovery journey though, detox options are a very real need, and not something that can be obtained without more specialist help.

Local mutual aid meetings *can* be a huge help, and can be a source of potential sponsors and sober mentors for the future. But for short term help for detox, you'll need professional assistance.

NHS Addiction Options

Immediate help to detox from NHS services is usually not possible. It's more common to receive a referral to a local Drug/Alcohol support team, and begin weekly meetings with a keyworker.

Usually, only the more complex cases with a long history of addiction are considered for placement into specialist detox units.

Where no public healthcare short term options are viable, or where the individual doesn't have enough funding in place for treatment, we often see families and friends pooling together to finance detox for a loved one.

Step 4 - Read The Reviews

Reviews of your chosen provider are easy to find on the net, but are they real?

Arm yourself from the outset, with the *only* truly impartial consumer report available for private clinics - the Care Quality Commission (England & Wales) and/or Care Inspectorate (Scotland) inspection reports.

The CQC and The Care Inspectorate are the industry regulators, and complete routine inspections of private rehabs, which are often classified under the 'Care Homes' category, in their records.

Clinics are graded across multiple areas of care, including support standards, management, and clinical environment.

How Clinic Inspections Work

On paper, a visit by regulators to a clinic can be "Announced", or "Unannounced" - the former means the clinic knew about the inspection in advance, the latter means they didn't. Hence, "Unannounced" inspection reports are more likely to provide a real-world picture of clinic conditions and service levels.

Step 5 - Arrange Admission

Now is the time to come to a decision about where you're completing treatment.

Expect to go through a few questions initially, when you call the provider you've chosen - this is normal.

An assessment shouldn’t normally take more than 20 minutes, after which you can pay any required financial deposit over the phone and expect some form of booking confirmation and receipt of payment.

Any additional financial issues, such as paying via insurance policy, would normally also be sorted out at this stage.

Step 6 - Paying For Rehab

As mentioned above, paying a deposit means the clinic can prepare for your arrival, and allocate your room booking.

Because the total booking value is high, even a small percentage deposit could work out anywhere from £2,000 - £4,000 for the higher end providers.

The days of clinics offering finance facilities directly, are mostly gone, although a few do still offer in-house plans to pay for treatment.

An email confirmation of your booking is usually sent to you, confirming the next steps.

The Remaining Funding

The provider will likely ask you to settle the remainder of the treatment balance due, after arrival at the clinic.

To avoid excess charges later, it's best to settle this on time.

Step 7 - Admission Into Treatment

By now, you should have an agreed time and date of arrival at a clinic.

Bring along a few supplies with you, like those below. You should be able to arrange for anything else, after arrival.

  • Informal clothing for routine clinic activities
  • Basic toiletries
  • Suitable clothing and extras required for any available gym/swim/sauna amenities
  • Any prescribed medication you normally take

Your booking confirmation or documentation received should note guidance on extras such as internet usage, family visits, and precautions or special measures in place as a result of covid-19.

Do you have transport to the clinic organised? Making sure of this will help avoid any potential extra charges levied for late arrival.

Take a well-deserved rest, as the road to recovery opens up before you.
