Detox
Detoxification is about managing the period when the body readjusts to not having alcohol in the system. It is important that detox medication is tailored to meet the specific needs of each individual, minimizing any potential physical withdrawal symptoms and mental anxiety. At Abbeycare detox medication is a temporary replacement provided alongside proper nutrition and rest.
We encourage clients to meet with their own GP prior to admission to discuss whether a detox prescription is required. We feel the continuity of being able to discuss your plans for treatment and detox with your own GP ensures that you receive a continuity of care from your GP who will be most aware of your own specific health care needs.
Should you be unable or unwilling to receive a detox prescription from your own GP we will arrange for you to receive a consultation from our consultant GP. He will assess your physical health, alcohol history, quantity of alcohol being consumed, take your blood pressure and pulse rate and will prescribe medication to assist with your withdrawal, should you require it. The most commonly used drug's for alcohol withdrawal is Chlordiazepoxide (Librium) and on occasions Diazepam (Valium).
During the detox process client's can experience emotions such as fear and anxiety. At Abbeycare we supervise the detox process ensuring that the process is as relaxed, comfortable and effective as possible. Often within day's medication can be reduced and client's find themselves able to fully participate in the programme.
Psychiatric Support
There are high rates of psychiatric disorders among individuals dependent on alcohol. These clients present with a range of problems and disorders, chiefly anxiety and mood disorders. At Abbeycare we have a Consultant Psychiatrist as part of the team who can assess and support any client who is currently experiencing or has a past history of mental health problems.
