The Therapists and Healthcare Team at Abbeycare

David Fidler – Cognitive Behavioural Therapist

I worked for the Dept for International Development for 20 years, jobs included HR Manager, Programme Manager and member of the Advisory Group on Diversity – I travelled the world, working full time in Bangladesh, South Africa and Afghanistan. I have a degree in Psychology and Biology, a diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and MSc in Drugs and Alcohol: Policy and Intervention. I also work as Co-tutor on CBT hons degree course and as a CBT counsellor. I went into rehab myself in 1989 and am a recovering addict, alcoholic and compulsive gambler.

I now live in Saltcoats, Ayrshire, with my wife Stephanie, also a recovering addict.

I practice at Abbeycare, The Medical Suite Scotland UK, Centre Of Therapy and offer CBT and counselling in Ayrshire from my office in Ardrossan.

Marie McGuire – Cognitive Behavioural Therapist

I was employed within social work services for 30 years, the last 12 years of which were within Glasgow Addiction Servces where I was resonsible for the management and practice of a specialist team that provided addiction interventions and recovery support to individuals and families.

I studied Drugs and Alcohol: Policy and Intervention at Glasgow University and Multidimensional Family Therapy (MDFT) at Miami University. I qualified as a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist (CBT) in 2004 and have tutored on the same CBT hons degree course in Glasgow for 7 years.

I also practice as a CBT counsellor and supervisor. I am currently undertaking a diploma in Training and Development and I am a member of the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapists.

I have had the privilege of witnessing individuals making significant change in their lives and realise goals that they had considered beyond them. We all need support, love and care – when we are able to provide these things for ourselves then everyone around us benefits and anything is possible.

Tony Pace – counsellor

In 1988 Tony began his career in London as a Counsellor at the Cranston Project Treatment Centre, later moving on to the Red Admiral Project offering help, support and counselling to those affected by HIV and Aids.

After completing a Diploma in Psychotherapy he then spent a year training at the world acclaimed Clouds House in Wiltshire. Tony then joined the Rehabilitation for Addicted Prisoners Trust (RAPt) as a Senior Counsellor at HMP Wandsworth and HMP Downview, becoming Manager of both programmes.

In 2000 Tony joined Focus12 as Clinical Manager, through his counselling contribution this community based service had become one of the UK’s leading providers of 12-step abstinent treatment.
After ten years at Focus12 Tony moved on and spent two years developing other UK based treatment centres before joining Abbeycare. Tony has been at Abbeycare for nearly four years as a Senior Therapist and manages the daily structure of the treatment programme.

As a recovering alcoholic and ex drug user Tony has personal knowledge of what it takes to recover, and is dedicated in using his experience to encourage and help others seeking recovery from addiction.

Tony knows: ‘if access to the right kind of help is gained, all alcoholics and drug addicts are able to recover and go on to live their life free from addiction’.
